What anesthesia will I be given for transplant?

We prefer to perform a kidney transplant under epidural anesthesia. An injection is administered in the lower back to cause the lower half of the body to become numb and insensitive to pain. During the transplant, you will be awake and fully aware of your surroundings, without experiencing any pain or discomfort. The same anesthesia can be continued even after surgery, for 2-3 days so that you can continue to be pain-free even after surgery.

Another method of anesthesia is general anesthesia. In this procedure, you will he put to sleep, and will be awakened after the transplant is over. Your anesthetist will examine you before deciding to administer either form of anesthesia.
