Post Operative Procedures
After your transplant surgery, you will be shifted to the Intensive Care Unit of KANTI. This is different from the Intensive Care Unit of Columbia Asia Medical Center. At KANTI, we believe in “barrier nursing”, which means that your nurse will not be involved in looking after any other patients. This minimizes the risk of cross contamination from patients who may be suffering from diseases like tuberculosis, cholera, typhoid, etc.
You will have several tubes entering and exiting from your body for some days.
- The intravenous line for fluid replacement is for transfusing saline, glucose, blood (if required), etc. This tube is usually removed on the 3 rd day after your surgery.
- The urinary catheter (a tube that is inserted into your urinary bladder to drain urine) is usually removed on the 4 th day after surgery.
- The drain (a tube that is inserted during surgery to remove excess fluid from around your new kidney) is usually removed on the 2 nd or 3 rd day.
- Your blood will be checked daily to make sure that everything has gone on well with your surgery.
- Your urine will be measured hourly or 2 hourly.
- If all is well, as it usually is, you can expect to be shifted to the ward on the 4 th day after your urinary catheter has been removed.
- You will be discharged on the 5 th or 6 th day!
- After your discharge, you will be required to attend the out-patient clinic for follow up check up.
