How long does haemodialysis treatment last?

Usually each haemodialysis treatment lasts about 3-4 hours and it is done three times a week. This has to be done life long, or until a successful transplant. In haemodialysis (HD) blood is taken out of your body and cleaned by exposing it to a special solution, OUTSIDE YOUR BODY.

What is peritoneal dialysis?

In peritoneal dialysis (PD) blood is not removed from your body, but a special solution is lead into your stomach cavity and exposed to your blood, I NSIDE YOUR BODY.

Will an access be needed for Peritoneal Dialysis?

Yes. Just as an access is needed in hd, to remove blood from your body, an access is needed in pd, too, to instill a special solution (PD fluid) into your stomach cavity.

A Peritoneal Catheter is inserted by a relatively minor operation in the operation theatre. PD fluid will have to be connected to this catheter to initiate dialysis.
